Simone Dalla Bella s’intéresse aux mécanismes cognitifs et neuronaux qui déterminent la perception et la performance musicales. Sa recherche a porté sur les habiletés musicales, telles que la perception et la production de la hauteur et du rythme, dans la population générale ainsi que chez les individus avec des déficits musicaux (surdité musicale quant à la hauteur ou au rythme). Sa recherche actuelle est centrée sur 1) l’évaluation et le profilage des capacités rythmiques chez les individus en santé et dans les populations cliniques (patients avec la maladie de Parkinson, TDAH) et 2) l’usage de la stimulation et de l’entraînement rythmique pour améliorer les habiletés motrices (ex: la démarche et la parole chez les patients de la maladie de Parkinson). Il utilise des méthodes comportementales, la capture de mouvement, l’EEG, et exploite des nouvelles technologies portables qui servent à l’évaluation et à l’entraînement.

Mon domaine de recherche est la neuropsychologie cognitive. L'approche se caractérise par l'étude des effets de lésions cérébrales sur les fonctions cognitives. Les fonctions qui m'intéressent sont: la perception et la reconnaissance musicale; les émotions; le langage; la prosodie; la mémoire. Ces fonctions ont toutes un lien avec la cognition musicale qui demeure mon champ d'intérêt principal. Outre les cérébro-lésés, nous travaillons aussi avec les adultes sains neurologiquement ou présentant un trouble congénital particulier (autisme, amusie congénitale). Enfin, nous exploitons diverses techniques d'exploration dont, actuellement, les potentiels évoqués (ERPs), l'imagerie cérébrale par résonance magnétique et les réponses électrodermales. Enfin, notre équipe a accès à deux labratoires. L'un se trouve au département de psychologie au sein du Centre de recherche du GRENE et l'autre à l'Institut universitaire de gériatrie de Montréal. Mes travaux de recherche bénéficient du support financier du CRSNG et du IRSC (CRM) ainsi que du FCAR et du FRSQ.

Dr. Simon Rigoulot is a Professor of Neurosciences and Psychology at the University of Québec à Trois-Rivières (UQTR, Dept. of Psychology) and an Associate Professor at Université de Montréal. He studied Cognitive Sciences at Université de Lille (France), and defended his thesis in 2008. His work has been focused on Affective Neurosciences and deals with the neural correlates of the processing of emotional information, in visual and auditory modalities. He is now interested in multimodal emotional information and how individual factors such as cultural background or emotional skills influence this processing. His research methods involve a multi-dimensional approach, combining peripheral (Eye-Tracking, Skin Conductance Response, Heart Rate, Electro-myography…), central (Electro- and Magneto-Encephalography, functional near infrared spectroscopy) and behavioral measures. His projects also aim to shed light on the links between a set of emotional competences (identification, detection, regulation, and utilization) and the development of psychopathologies such as anxiety, depression. In parallel, his interests extended to the study of speech and music, through two specific avenues. The first concerns the role of prosody (tone of voice) in conveying meaningful information, be it emotion or real intention of speakers, such as in irony, lies, innuendos. The second one is about the processing of rhythmic information and the ability of lay participants to synchronize to this type of information, and how attentional and emotional processes can affect this ability.

I was originally trained in mathematics and neuroimaging and now I'm interested in how we can have effective dialogue on challenging topics. In order to study this I work on empathy and interpersonal communication. I approach the question theoretically, through empirical study, and through on-the-ground interventions.
